Every once in a while, I’m stopped in my tracks while working or surfing online and I say to myself, “My kids have got to see this.” Something about the wonder of a video, the mind-blowing beauty of an image or sound, or the sheer coolness of a fact or graphic drives me to want to share things I find with my children. And I love the time I spend with my three young daughters then, later that evening, pulling up those wonders I found and sharing my excitement about them with my girls.

Imagine my delight, then, when I discovered a site the other day specifically geared towards parents like me who want to share the best of the web with their children. The Kid Should See This is, very literally, a holding place for examples of the best of human achievement. The site’s description says:

There’s just so much science, nature, music, art, technology, storytelling and assorted good stuff out there that my kids (and maybe your kids) haven’t seen. It’s most likely not stuff that was made for them…

But we don’t underestimate kids around here.

I was drawn there myself by a video of a young string quartet playing Katy Perry’s Firework. With a young violinist and cellist at home, I’m always on the lookout for examples of how fun and diverse their instruments can be. But from there was wandered to a 1964 video of Sister Rosetta Tharpe singing live in Manchester and then to jellyfish and then a leaping praying mantis… You get the idea.
